For a very long time I’ve wanted to write a book. But what would I write about? I’ve been told by many people that writing a book is something I should do. Now is the time. I’ve decided on writing a memoir. There are so many stories in my life that I could write about. I think the hardest part will be deciding on one.
I am only in the beginning of the process. I’m going to start by making a list of big events that have taken place in my life. From there I will detail my memories of those moments, and hopefully this will help me to narrow down my topic.
I’m thinking I will periodically blog about my progress without giving any real in-depth detail about it, but this will help to keep me accountable for staying the course with my book.
I am filled with fear about doing this, which is exactly why I’m going to do it. Some stories need to be told so others know they are not alone in their experience, in their feelings surrounding their experience, and coping with their experience.
Wish me luck on this new adventure, and I hope you will stay tuned as I give updates to my progress. I also hope you stay tuned to my blog, because that’s why I blog 🙂
One of the best decisions I ever made was to write my memoir. Good Luck! 🙂

I could have written your post! That’s exactly what I’ve been saying to myself, I’m going to write a memoir! Have you started yours? Any tips for beginners?

I’ve started twice and then changed the life event I wanted to write about. I’m back to the drawing board again. I wold love to give you tips, but unfortunately I am a beginner myself and I fear any tips I might give you would lead you astray. I have so many different life events that I could write about that I’m having a hard time narrowing it down. If you know what you want to write about, then that’s a good start. I am using the free 30 day trial of Scrivener for mine. It is actually 30 days of use not a consecutive 30 days, so that’s nice. Some people don’t use any sort of writing software though. I think it’s just a preference thing. I decided to try the software simple because it’s my first book and I wanted some sort of organization to keep my stuff straight. Other than that, I can’t offer you much more guidance, I’m sorry. I will wish you luck and say that I’m excited for you though 🙂

Thank you! The Scrivener advice is useful, I’ll check that out. I know what you mean about lots of different life events, but I have narrowed it down to two – I would like to write about the wonderful two years I spent at a girls’ boarding school in England in the 1970s, and I also want to write about the past five years of my life when we boat a boat, renovated it, then sailed from UK to Greece! We currently live aboard full time for most of the summer, and have had lots of adventures. Good luck with yours!
